Kat von D – Shade and light contour palette

Kat Von D first found global fame in the TV show Miami Ink then L.A Ink with her striking tattoo designs and her amazing talent for portraits. When it came to creating her own make up range Kat Von D drew from her artistic back ground. which in turn has resulted in some absolutely amazing products adored by make up artists the world over.

So when my lovely friend Lynn went on an amazing Birthday trip to New York recently and offered to pick me up some bits. I knew I wanted to try one of Kat Von D’s most popular products the Shade and Light contour palette.  This is currently a real struggle to get here in the UK, although there are rumours that Kat Von D’s make up will soon be available in Boots stores. Luckily for me Lynn managed to pick one up for me

An expert sketch artist, Kat Von D uses shadow and light to create depth and dimension in her captivating portraits, infusing them with lifelike authenticity. Take artistry shading into your own hands with this Shade + Light Contour Palette. Effortlessly sculpt, chisel, shape, and slenderize your features for enhanced definition. Unlike traditional bronzing powders, the Shade + Light Contour Palette is loaded with a unique selection of matte shades that capture the true hues of shadow and light. The three contour shades create realistic shadows to recede facial features, while the three highlight shades impart a soft luminosity to amplify dimension.  These silky, buildable powders blend effortlessly into the skin for a flawless, fade-proof finish that flatters every skin tone or face shape.

The palette is cased in a sleek black cardboard package with a magnet fastening. With Shade and Light written in black and silver across the front in an edgy font. Although cardboard the packaging is sturdy and doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy. The style of the palette screams Kat!

In the Palette is a full size mirror which is fabulous. You get 6 shades in total all of which are matte. Three of the shades are highlights and the other three contouring hues. You also get a guide which shows you how to contour your face, which is really handy even if you have been contouring and highlighting for months. And a must read for beginners.

The Shades included are :

Lucid – Described as pinkish nude, its a slightly pink beige shade.

Lyric –  Described as a yellow beige which I think describes it perfectly.

Levitation – Described as a soft peach, it looks slightly orange in the pan. I’d say it’s really light peachy nude.

Sombre – Described as a true taupe, It’s a medium ashy brown.

Shadowplay – Described as a soft brown, I’d say it’s medium slightly warmer toned brown.

Subconscious – Described as a deep brown, it’s a dark brown with some warmth.

I absolutely love the range of shades in the palette, at first I was a bit nervous about highlighting with matte shades. I’m used to at least some shimmer, I thought I might look a bit flat. However this wasn’t an issue at all. The shades are so finely milled and blendable that you are left without feeling like you are wearing a mask. The formula is slightly powdery but it’s really easy to work with and so buildable. I can’t fault it.

I use a mix of both the peach and yellow shades to set my under eye area, both of which are amazing and Lucid to highlight the high points on my face. I have been using Sombre to create shadows on my face and Shadowplay to add depth and slim the outer areas of my face. Subconscious is a bit dark for me at the moment but I’m sure I will get more use in the summer, or when I want to create a more drastic contour.

This is without doubt one of my all time fave contour products and if you can this is worth adding to your collection. What do you use to contour? Which shade do you think you would get the most use of? Are there any Kat Von D products you really want to own? Let me know all your thoughts by commenting below.

Lots of Love,
